Hornet's poison needles
Bullet TrainHornet's poison needles are the weapons associated with the poisoner known as the Hornet, and they connect two mysteries aboard the train: Minegishi's son's death without visible wounds and the attacks on Nanao. Their threat lies not only in poison but in how easily a small needle can be carried and used amid ordinary train activity. When one bends against a door, its altered shape also changes the course of the confrontation, allowing Nanao to use the weapon against his attacker.
The rumored method
Nanao proposes that the Hornet poisoned Minegishi's son, reasoning that poison would explain the absence of visible wounds. Tangerine does not claim to know the assassin's exact technique. He relays a rumor: the Hornet uses needles to trigger anaphylaxis, with a first prick activating the immune system and a second provoking a severe allergic reaction that can kill through shock. The account gives the needle a specific role in a staged method, but its status remains reported information rather than a demonstrated explanation of the son's death. Even Nanao's follow-up question about whether the second prick is the deadly one receives no firm confirmation.
That uncertainty matters. The proposed method supplies a possible cause for a death that otherwise lacks an apparent physical explanation, but the characters are still trying to locate the attacker and establish what happened. The needles therefore operate as both a practical weapon and a clue: they make the absence of visible wounds legible as possible evidence of poisoning, without resolving the case by themselves.
Concealed among ordinary train activity
The suspected attacker is encountered in the role of a concessions seller, dressed in a blue button-down shirt and indigo apron and moving with a cart. Nanao sees a needle glitter in her hand as she advances. The ordinary setting disguises the weapon's presence: the woman can move through the train among passengers and refreshments without immediately attracting suspicion. Later, Nanao and Maria consider the seller's ability to circulate through the carriages relevant to how the Hornet's associates may have operated.
During the confrontation, Nanao retreats through the gangway and loses the gun he had taken from Lemon. The woman kicks it away and throws a needle at him. It strikes the door and falls; the impact bends it, turning its point upward. Nanao does not initially recognize the altered needle as a continuing danger. When he puts his hand down, he is pricked and understands that it is poisoned. The sequence makes the needle's small physical change decisive: it has failed to hit him as intended, yet its bent point leaves it dangerous on the floor.
A weapon turned back on its user
Nanao uses a gift-wrapped box of souvenir snacks as a shield when the woman thrusts at him again. The needle pierces the box, and he pulls it aside to draw her arm with it, creating an opening to knock her down. The box is improvised protection, not a reliable barrier; the needle passes through it, and Nanao has to use the moment it buys him to change the balance of the encounter.
After the woman begins reaching for the gun, Nanao secures it, picks up the needle, and plunges it into her shoulder. The reversal is immediate and practical: he takes the attacker's own weapon and turns it against her. The scene does not establish what ultimately happens to her, but it shows that the needle's danger does not depend on its being wielded by the Hornet. Once separated from its user, it remains available to anyone who can reach it—and Nanao's quick decision makes the weapon part of his defense.
From a train attack to the Morioka mystery
Later, when Nanao and Maria leave Minegishi at the station, people around him discover a needle lodged in his back. Nanao asks whether it was the Hornet, and Maria understands that he means the poisoner rather than an insect. He recalls the concessions seller he fought on the train and says that he took her out. This connects the needle found on Minegishi with the earlier confrontation, but the discovery itself does not establish who placed it there or whether it was the same weapon used against Nanao.
Nanao and Maria then reason that the Hornets may have targeted both Minegishi and his son. If so, Tangerine and Lemon could have obstructed the attempt, and hiring Nanao and Maria to steal the suitcase may have served as a diversion. Nanao further considers that the concessions seller or the conductor could have contacted him with the suitcase's location after the train left Tokyo, since either could move through the train without arousing suspicion. He also considers whether one of them contacted Minegishi and directed him to Morioka, where reaching him would be easier. These remain deductions, not confirmed findings, but the needles give the theory a material link between the son's unexplained death, the attack on Nanao, and the needle discovered on Minegishi.
The object thus shifts in meaning across the episode. At first it is evidence for a rumored method that might explain a death; aboard the train it becomes a concealed and mobile threat; after striking the door it becomes a hazard created by its own deformation; in Nanao's hands it becomes a means of resistance; and at Morioka a needle found on Minegishi renews suspicion about the Hornet's reach. Its smallness permits it to pass through scenes of ordinary service and travel, while each discovery makes that apparent ordinariness harder to trust.
